Services Offered:
Computer Aided Design and Engineering (CAD/CAE)
Long Line Technology makes extensive use of CAD/CAE - computer aided design and engineering. Our design capabilities include civil works (Platforms, Foundations, Plinths and Control Rooms), mechanical works (steelwork, supports and control panels) as well switchyard layout and elevation designs.
All drawings are produced on industry standard Autodesk™ AutoCAD® software
Network Expansion Planning and System Studies
Our range of specialist services includes network expansion planning, system integration studies, fault level calculations, load flow calculations, harmonic analysis, protection grading and protection relay settings.
We provide short time electro-magnetic transient simulations. Models are created within ETAP®, Matlab® and EMTP-RV and insulation co-ordination to IEC 60071 is carried out.
We provide full system studies using industry standard ETAP® electronic modeling software including:
- Data Capture of all relevant system data (generator sizes, anticipated fault levels, anticipated loading, large motors, harmonic sources etc).
- Site survey to determine optimal positioning, loadings and harmonic distortion Collation of information and setting up of electrical models.
- Validation of models and checking for inconsistencies.
- Load flow studies with volt drops at all busbars.
- Power Factor Correction requirements to a recommended power factor.
- Harmonic studies with modeled harmonic sources and required PFC and/or harmonic filtration (including STATCOM’s)
- Short circuit fault studies and specification of short circuit levels at all busbars.
- Transient stability studies and motor starting studies with volt drops at affected busbars.
- Protection recommendations and philosophies as well as protection coordination (settings).
- Provision of reports with conclusions, recommendations and specifications.
Specifications, Design and Offered/Guaranteed Schedules
We provide specifications, designs and drawings for all forms of electrical protection and control using all the major manufacturers (Areva/Alstom, ABB, Reyrolle/Siemens, etc) including protection schemes for overhead lines (Impedance protection), power transformers and generators (Differential and unit protection), power factor correction, harmonic filters, buszone (low and high impedance)
We provide:
- Specifications, designs and drawings for communications interfaces (F/O and PLC), SCADA and MMI (Modbus, CanBus, IEEE, Ethernet, etc).
- Detailed specifications and schedules for offered and guaranteed parameters for HV, MV and LV electrical equipment.
- Specifications, schedules and designs for all supporting steelwork, foundations, civil works, corrosion protection and other ancillary specifications.
Overhead Line Design to 400kV
We provide overhead line design including: sag and tension tables, line profiles, line mapping/spotting, tower design (monopole and lattice). Industry standard PLS-CADD® software and AutoCAD® software is used for overhead line designs
Power Generation
We engineer, design and specify LFO, HFO and gas engine generation projects and provide complete integration of engine control units, engine controllers (for mains fail/auto-start, multiple generators synch and load share, and co-generation scenarios) with alternators and
switchgear for all makes of equipment.
Renewable Energy
Renewable power source projects such as wind, solar, gas and hydro generation form part of our capabilities.
We have engineered solar installations up to 8 MW and specialize in utility scale (grid connected) solar installation and grid integration
We provide integrated design solutions for off-grid power and energy storage, including battery banks for use with hybrid systems with local generation that co-generate with grid connected power.
Reactive Power, Harmonic Filtration and STATCOM’s
We specialize in the design of power factor correction systems, harmonic filters, static VAR compensators, active power filters and static VAR generators (STACOM) at all voltage levels.
Integration of SVC/SVG’s with local generation (while islanded or co-generating) forms part of our capability.
Power Transformers, Special Transformers and MV Switchgear
We supply Power Transformers (from 6.6kV up to 500kV and 500MVA) and air cored reactors up to 400kV.
We design and supply rectifier transformers (6 pulse / 12 pulse) and dry type (cast resin) transformers for special applications
We design and supply DQS MV ring main units, and MV fused isolator units (indoor and outdoor)
We are offical channel partners for ABB (sub-Saharan Africa) and resellers of the full range of ABB equipment and products, including Solar Power, Inverters, STATCOM's and HV Equipment
Project Management and Core Team
Our project management and engineering capabilities enable us to operate throughout the African continent and we have successfully completed projects in Mali, Birkina Faso, Ghana, Tanzania, DRC, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa.
We have a primary core of highly skilled engineers and a secondary core of skilled, experienced artisans available for any electrical infrastructure project. We subcontract and supervise specialist skills worldwide as required by the project.

Our construction team is capable of implementing and constructing all Long Line Technology designs and specifications, we have active teams in South Africa as well as Democratic Republic of Congo, able to mobilize to new projects within two working weeks.
